The first day I walked into Digital Photography, I was nervous. I kept wondering what we would do throughout this trimester and whether or not I would do well in this class. After the first day, my nerves had calmed because the class did not seem as hard as I thought it would be. The first day we were told to get out cameras out and take photographs I was skeptical. How would I be able to take a good photograph with being taught very little about photography. The photo that I took were dark and most had not obvious subject in the photograph. After we became comfortable with our cameras and taking photos, the class was introduced to Photoshop. When I first opened Photoshop I was not intimidated by it because I have opened and used it before very briefly. I had never gone into depth with the application and learned about it's multiple tools. The first assignment was simple. We had to take a picture and create a color pop image like those done by Andy Warhol. As the trimester continued, my Photoshop abilities improved. For our open project, I decided to stretch beyond what I was able to do because I wanted to learn all I could about Photoshop before the class was over. The difference between the two Photoshop assignment is fascinating still because before this class, I was barely able to use the Clone Stamp Tool. By the time we reached the final photography projects, I felt like a pro. I was confident in my work and the end results were great. There were compositional techniques in every aspect of the photographs that added to the overall picture. By the end there was also very little need for editing the photographs.

For this assignment, we were taken outside to take a motion photograph of Mr. Bush riding his bicycle. The objective was to have him as in focus and we could while having the background show the motion with the blur. Overall, I feel my photograph came out good, however, if we had more time and I was able to take as many photographs as I wanted, the quality of the picture would have been better.
This week's Photoshop assignment was Multiple Me. For this assignment I had to take multiple pictures of myself in various positions, and combined them into one photo, using image masks. where I was present multiple times. For this picture, I put myself in multiple places in my room. This was interesting to shoot because I had to keep in mind where the other pictures were going to be a place myself accordingly to make it look like they were interacting with one another.
For this week's assignment, I chose to do people. For this, I hung out with my friends and just took pictures of them goofing off, trying to receive the most candid photos I could. Sometimes this was difficult because they were moving too much and were blurred in the photos. I found this assignment easy because the pictures capture the personality of the people and the fun they were having. What I learned from this assignment is that some of the best photos are the ones that are unexpected. I chose this photograph as my best because they fill the frame and their smiles reflect the genuine fun they were having that afternoon. Best PhotoThis week's Photoshop Assignment was a portrait demo. We learned the different lighting techniques for taking a window portraits, where natural light was shined onto the subject, and studio portraits, where multiple lights were shined onto the subject. I liked this assignment because it showed me different ways to light my subjects for future photo assignments.
For this week's photo assignment I decided to do black and white. I decided to do this because I liked the way many of my other pictures look in black and white and decided to use them for this assignment. What I learned from this project was that even though a photo looks good in color, it may not look as good in black and white. I decided that this was my best photo because I liked the character that the black and white gave the picture. The black and white simplifies that picture while also making it more interesting with all of the different shades that are visible. Best PhotoFor this photoshop assignment we were allowed to picture our own tutorial to follow. Doing this I was allowed to pick a tutorial that matched my interests and what I wanted to learn in Photoshop. I decided to do a sci-fi landscape because I wanted to learn how to blend many different photos and use new tools to be able to create one picture that could be real.
I enjoyed this tutorial because it taught me multiple different tools and settings that I did not previously know how to use as well as reenforced other techniques that I did. Although I did need some help understand some the tool/language of the tutorial, as soon as it was explained I understood what I needed to do. This week I decided to do light painting. Earlier this week we learned about light painting and the different ways to achieve certain looks. This was interesting because I was able to learn by trial and error the best way to create a light painting. I used my sister as my subject in several of the pictures as well as another pair of hands for others. I chose this as my best photo because I liked the way that the light reflected off of both the ground and the subject. If I were to create this again I would try different patterns or different colored lights to receive a different affect. Best PhotoFor this Photoshop assignment, we were tasked with creating five panoramas. To create the panoramas, multiple pictures with a 30-40% overlap were required. The multiple pictures were stitched together to create one panoramic picture.
I learned that taking panoramas is easier than I thought, but there are certain guidelines that should be followed. In addition, I learned more about Photoshop and the different settings that are a part of Photomerge. For this week's assignment I decided to photograph nature around Ann Arbor. As I walked around, it was difficult to take multiple pictures because everything is very similar, but changing the angle as well as the position of the subject in the frame allowed for multiple great pictures to be taken of the same object. My best photo is the of the swan and the duck. I liked this photograph because the swan and the duck are both positioned in the same way. I also like the depth that is created in the picture with the bushes in the front of the photo. Best PhotoIn this Photoshop assignment, we were tasked with changing the context of the school. This assignment was interesting because there were so many directions this project could have gone. However, there came a point where the more I tried to add, the less realistic the picture looked. In the end, my picture is different than the original (bottom) and more interesting.
For this assignment, I chose to do macro. In this project, I tried to take macro photographs that would show the texture of the object as well as the details of the subject. Some of the photographs had to retaken multiple times because they picture did not turn out how I wanted them. While shooting these pictures I learned that lighting can affect the way texture is portrayed in an image. My best photograph is of a painting hanging in my house that was painted by my Great-Great Uncle. This picture emphasizes the texture of the canvas and the brush strokes made creating the painting. Best PhotoAssignment DescriptionToday we learned about retouching photographs in Adobe Photoshop. We practiced with a picture of a car taken by a past student (left). The task was to retouch the car by removing some of the lights and getting rid of the extra activity happening in the background (right).
This week I did still life photography. For this project, I went around trying to find objects that I could take interesting photographs of. There were several things that looked great around my house, many of the pictures that I took, did not look as good as the actual object. All of the photos I took were sorted through until 10 photo were found that were worthy of the project. During this project I learned different ways to light a subject and a room to create a different effect. I also learned how to hid mine and the camera's shadow. My best picture is of one of my dad's many old cameras that he collects. I liked this picture because the light was shining so where the bulb would have been and well as across the lens, giving the camera an interesting look. Best PhotoThis week's photo assignment I chose architecture because I have always found it interesting no matter where I go. For this assignment, I visited University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University to take picture of the buildings with interesting architecture. Although it was cold outside and I could barely feel my fingers, the sun was shining, allowing me to take multiple shots of the architecture with great lighting. During this assignment, I learned to adjust the settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO) of the camera as well as the position of the camera, relative to the subject, to create a photograph which portrayed the aspects of the architecture. The best picture I took for this project was the back of a building near EMU. I think this picture is my best because it shows the rugged character of the building through the different back porches and the condition they are in. Overall, my pictures showed the interesting aspects of the architecture, both old and new. Best Photo |
